Preventative eye care is important for everyone

Preventive Eye Care

Preventive eye care is important to everyone. Certain eye conditions and diseases can destroy your and your family’s healthy vision and can strike at any age.

Infants and toddlers:
Pediatricians usually screen for common eye problems, such as strabismus (crossed eyes) and amblyopia (lazy eye). However, a screening by an eye doctor is more thorough and can assist in preventing future threats to vision development. At 6 Months old, 3 years old, and before starting kindergarten are critical times to evaluate how your child’s eyes are developing.
Remember that your child can’t tell you about experiencing blurry vision, seeing double, or any other kind of vision problem. When a child has always seen the world that way, that way seems normal. It’s up to you to be on the alert for any problems.
Our office provides a free vision screening for all children school age or younger. This includes evaluation for:
  • Farsightedness
  • Nearsightedness
  • Astigmatism
  • Color vision
  • Depth perception
  • Eye focusing
  • Eye movement skills

We will discuss our findings and review our recommendations based on examination results. A screening is not a complete eye examination and does not include a comprehensive dilated eye health evaluation.

Children and teenagers:
School aged children should have an eye exam every 2 years if they have normal eyesight. If your child wears glasses or contacts, they should have yearly exams to evaluate changes. As children grow taller, their eyes change too.
Most children have healthy eyes, but they still need to take care of their vision by wearing protective eyewear when playing sports, doing yard work, working with chemicals or taking part in other activities that could cause an eye injury.
It is never too early to begin protecting your eyes from the damaging effects of the sun. UV protection is important. This can be placed in clear lenses for those who wear glasses. Otherwise, sunglasses with UV protection are suggested.

Young adults and middle-aged individuals:
Use preventive measures to protect eyes from injury and the damaging effects of UV light.
Have a complete eye exam at least every 2 to 3 years to rule out the development of eye diseases.
As we approach age 40, near vision can become a struggle. This is a normal change in our focusing system and can be helped by using over the counter reading glasses or prescription glasses. An eye examination can determine which power is right for you.
Over age 40 also means higher risk for eye conditions like Glaucoma. This condition has no symptoms early on, but causes severe loss of vision if allowed to progress. Early diagnosis and treatment of the disease can prevent vision loss. Get those eye exams!

Seniors over age 65:
A complete eye exam every one to two years to evaluate for cataracts, glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration and other eye conditions is highly recommended. See our website www.eyecareok.com for more information about these conditions.

If any of the following risk factors affect you, yearly eye examinations are suggested:
History of eye injury or disease
Diabetes
Family history of eye problems
African American over age 40
Any person over age 65
